“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine” has been bouncing through my memory for the last few weeks. It’s the start of a song I learned in Sunday school and the simple message has stuck with me throughout the years.

While thinking about this song, I realized that my spiritual journey is a continuing process of walking in the “light”. Sometimes it’s two steps forward and one step back but I’m always working my way towards shining brighter and learning to fully live the life I’m blessed with.

For me the process looks a little like this…

Recognizing My Light

Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. ~Chinese Proverb

This is where I battle “the voices”. It’s when I find I’m drifting towards negativity and have a shitty attitude about life. This is when I follow the advice from the Chinese Proverb listed above and light my candle, sometimes repeatedly. This allows me to pause long enough to realize that things may not be as bad as they seem. In this mind space I can curse the darkness and list all my complaints or I can light my candle and be grateful for my opportunities.

Discovering What Lights Me Up

We are each gifted in a unique and important way. It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light. ~Evelyn Dunbar

Getting to know myself has been exciting and terrifying. A busy life and lack of time were my excuses for ignoring the desires of my soul. But the truth is, I’d never given myself the opportunity to get to know myself. I allowed myself the privilege of discovering who I am and one of the most important things I learned is that it’s mandatory that we fall in love with ourselves.

Expanding My Light

Buddha said, – “Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

For me, expansion of light followed discovering what lit me up. As knowledge of myself grew so did my desire to to shine brighter. This is where I developed habits of study, meditation, and prayer. It’s the place where I feed my soul, expand my light, and ensure that I have plenty of light to share with others.

Shining Bright

Jesus in Luke 11:33, said, “No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.”

This little light of mine,

I’m gonna let it shine

Hide it under a bushel? No!

I’m gonna let it shine

Let it shine,

Let it shine,

Let it shine.

We all have a light within us and it’s my experience that it’s far from easy to let it shine. Judgments, expectations, obligations, fears, doubts, and life experiences can get in the way of our shining bright but consistently redirecting our thoughts and relighting our candles can move us out of the darkness and into the light.
